Word is well and truly out that Niseko is experiencing one of its best seasons ever. Riders have been treated to an endless number of powder days, lapping fresh lines until after lunchtime and cracking smiles as wide as the snow is deep. Don’t believe us when we say it’s as good as it gets? Then keep reading. We’ll let the numbers speak for themselves…
510
This is the current snowdepth up high at the Niseko Grand Hirafu Resort, which is one of the four resorts that make up the Niseko United ski area. This measurement is taken at 1000 meters above sea level.
560
According to Grand Hirafu’s statistics this is the highest recorded snow depth (in cm) in the last 20 years. It was recorded in March of 1999. In February of 1999 the snow depth was 510cm, which is exactly what the resort is sitting at right now. Hopefully this means we are on track to equal or better one of the best seasons of all time.
14.07
This is the amount of snow in meters that has fallen cumulatively so far this season, according to the Niseko Avalanche Institute. This is by far the most accurate source for snowfall data in the Niseko area. The snow depth is taken each morning at three different points around the resort, including an elevation of 1150 meters, which is where this statistic has come from. The Niseko Avalanche Institute is primarily responsible for researching and distributing avalanche safety information. They do invaluable work when it comes to providing a safe experience for those who wish to ride out of the Niseko backcountry gates. Make sure you check out their daily avalanche report each day before heading beyond the resort boundaries.
9.56
In meters, the amount of snow that’s fallen at Whistler Blackcomb this season. Whistler experienced some huge storms in December and January, which means it’s on target to reach or even surpass its average annual snow depth of 11.7 meters. But, even though they are having a massive winter, their totals are still falling short of what we’re seeing in Niseko.
13
The amount of days recorded with no snowfall since 1st December 2017. The severe lack of sunshine has had locals reaching for the vitamin D tablets. In between powder runs, of course.
10
In feet, the average height of the snowbanks around town (IMHO).
73
The number of days until the last lift stops turning in the Grand Hirafu resort! That means there is plenty of time left to shred the best pow on earth.
