HOW TO AVOID FOGGING YOUR GOGGLES

Ever heard the saying “you can’t slide if you can’t see?” No? That’s probably because we made it up just then. It makes sense though, especially in Japan.

Due to massive snowfalls it’s likely you will be skiing or boarding when the snow is dumping down and, while we all love getting our fix of powder, these are also the perfect conditions for goggle fogging. So here’s a few tips on how to care for your on mountain eye wear and help stop the fog!

1. WEAR BREATHABLE CLOTHING
One way to put an end to fogging goggles is by making sure you have breathable clothing on. The main goal here is to reduce head sweat. Starting with base layers, we recommend merino wool because its fibres are able to wick moisture vapour away from your skin and lessen the chance of over heating. We also recommend a merino or fleece mid layer along with good quality, breathable outerwear.

2. STOP SCRATCHING
Scratching your goggles can contribute to fogging. Avoid this by always storing them in the cloth bag they came in and never lie them face down on any surface. Also, never use your fingers to remove snow from inside your goggles as this will most definitely scratch them. Always tap the snow out instead.

3. KEEP FINGERS CLEAR
In fact, never touch the inside of your goggles ever. All good goggles come with an anti-fog coating on the inside of the lens. Touching this coating may break the film and contribute to fogging.

4. KEEP THEM DRY
If your goggles are wet, particularly the foam part around the eyes and nose, it’s highly likely they will fog. So make sure you dry them out after each day’s riding. If they get wet on the mountain, dry them with the hand dryer in the bathroom.

5. SHOP WISELY!
Trust us, you don’t want to pinch your pennies when shopping for goggles. A top of the range pair of goggles is more likely to withstand fogging due to its higher quality anti-fog coating, better and longer lasting foam and a closer fit for your face.

6. THE PERFECT FIT
It’s important that your goggles seal perfectly to your face, even when you’re wearing a helmet. Any gaps between the goggle and your skin could potentially contribute to fogging. It’s important to try as many different brands and styles as you can before making a purchase so allow yourself plenty of time to shop. And if you wear a brain bucket, make sure you bring it to the store with you. At Rhythm Japan we have a huge range of goggles and our expert staff are more than happy to take the time and help you find the perfect pair.
